The best way to tell if you have a short reach or long reach cap is to measure the distance from the retaining tabs to the sealing gasket. The short reach fuel cap has two retaining tabs on the back side that stick up about 1/4 inch from the sealing gasket. The alternative is a long reach fuel cap which has tabs that stick out just under 1/2 inch from the sealing gasket.
