ZF 5-Speed to Dana 20 Transfer Case Adapter Kit - 1966-77 Ford Bronco
This adapter kit allows you to mate a Ford ZF 5-speed 4WD manual transmission to the Dana 20 transfer case used in 1966-77 Ford Broncos. The adapter housing is constructed from 356 T6 heat-treated aluminum alloy for strength and durability. Designed exclusively for T-style transfer case shifters, this kit provides the required components to properly couple the ZF transmission to the Bronco’s Dana 20 transfer case.
Kit Includes
- Adapter plate
- Spud shaft with 31 internal splines
- Shifter linkage bracket
- Transfer case pivot bolt
- Bearing retainer
- Sealed bearing snap ring
- Gaskets and O-ring
- All fastening hardware
- Installation instructions
This adapter fits all 1966-77 Ford Bronco Dana 20 transfer cases. It is intended for use with T-style transfer case shifters; J-style transfer case applications require modification to retain proper function.
Transmission Compatibility
Designed exclusively for use with the Ford ZF 5-speed 4WD manual transmission (ZF S5-42 & S5-47). These heavy-duty aluminum transmissions feature an integral bellhousing and can be identified by their diamond-shaped casting ribs and small 4-bolt top cover.
- S5-42: Used in Ford trucks from 1987–1994
- S5-47: Used in Ford trucks from 1995 and later
The ZF 5-speed has been used in full-size Ford trucks from 1987 to the present. Installing the ZF transmission into an Early Bronco will require fabrication of a new crossmember. Due to the transmission's larger size, driveline modifications and a body lift are required. The ZF offers either a 4.65:1 or 5.72:1 first gear and a 23% overdrive, making it an excellent choice for both on-road and off-road performance.
