Manual Transmission

The 1966–1977 early Ford Bronco came with a 3-speed manual transmission as the standard gearbox, also refered to as a 3.03. The Ford Toploader 4 speed, NP435 or T18/19 were common swaps back in the day. The 3-speed was paired with the Dana 20 transfer case via a single stick shifter setup on the floor. The manual is preferred by many off-road purists for its direct feel and durability, although more modern 5 speeds are typically installed such as the AX15, NV3550, NV4500 and Tremec 4050.

You can identify an early Bronco's manual transmission by examining the external case shape, the number of shift levers visible from below, and an ID tag or casting number on the case. The Ford Toploader has a distinctive 3 lever on the side of the trans, while the NP435, T18/T19 is a much larger, heavier-duty unit. A VIN decode using the original build sheet will confirm the factory-installed transmission code.

The Ford 3 speed in early Broncos use GL-4 or GL-5 80W-90 gear oil. Avoid using automatic transmission fluid in these units. Change the fluid every 30,000 miles or whenever the transmission is serviced to maintain gear lubrication and synchronizer function.

Yes, overdrive manual transmission swaps are popular in early Broncos for improved highway fuel economy and reduced engine RPM at cruise. The AX15 5-speed is a common swap, as is the NV4500 and Tremec 4050. Each requires a compatible bellhousing adapter, modified or custom transmission crossmember, and a driveshaft length adjustment.
