Early Ford Bronco Differentials

The 1966–1977 early Ford Bronco came standard with a Dana 30 front axle from 1966-1971. It's a solid front axle with a 2,500 lb capacity, well-suited to the Bronco's original light off-road use. In the later half of 1971, Ford Broncos came from the factory with the heavier duty Dana 44. Many performance and off-road builds upgrade to a Dana 44 (if they have a Dana 30) for added strength when running larger tires or more aggressive terrain.

The Dana 30 and Dana 44 front axles in early Broncos use GL-5 80W-90 gear oil. If the axle is equipped with a limited-slip differential, a friction modifier additive is required alongside the gear oil to prevent chatter. Check and replace differential fluid every 30,000 miles or as part of any major drivetrain service.

The differential vent tube allows pressure caused by heat expansion to escape the axle housing, preventing seal blowouts. On early Broncos used off-road, especially those crossing water, it's common to extend the vent tube up into the engine bay or firewall to prevent water from being sucked into the differential housing during water crossings.
