Power Steering

The 1966–1977 early Ford Bronco used a recirculating ball-type power steering box, most commonly the Saginaw or Ford's own unit depending on year and configuration. Many early Broncos came from the factory with manual steering, making a power steering conversion a popular upgrade. Tom's Offroad carries both stock-replacement and upgrade power steering boxes for the early Bronco.

Converting an early Bronco from manual to power steering requires a power steering box, in some cases a new pitman arm, pump, pressure and return lines, and a pump mount kit for the engine. Tom's Offroad offers conversion kits that include all necessary components.

Early Bronco power steering systems use standard Type F or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid, check your specific box or pump for the manufacturer's recommendation. Avoid using power steering fluid formulated for modern rack-and-pinion systems in older recirculating ball boxes, as compatibility issues can accelerate seal wear. When replacing fluid, be sure to utilize the same type of fluid that was previously used in the system.

A leaking early Bronco power steering box can often be repaired with a seal rebuild kit, which includes all the O-rings, seals, and gaskets for the box internals. If the box housing is cracked or the sector shaft is worn, replacement is typically more cost-effective than a rebuild.
