Erratic or inaccurate gauges on an early Bronco are commonly caused by a faulty instrument voltage regulator, a poor ground connection at the instrument cluster, a failing sending unit at the fuel tank, oil gallery, or coolant housing, or corroded connections at the cluster plug. Start diagnosis by checking all grounds and sending unit wiring before replacing the gauges themselves.

Dakota Digital makes programmable digital and analog-style gauge systems designed to fit the early Bronco's factory dashboard opening without cutting or modification. The kits include a speedometer, fuel, temperature, oil pressure, and voltage gauges in a custom bezel that matches the factory cluster shape. Tom's Offroad carries Dakota Digital exclusive kits specifically engineered for the 1966–1977 Bronco.

Installing a gauge cluster in an early Bronco involves removing the dash bezel and instrument cluster screws, disconnecting the speedometer cable and cluster wiring harness, and pulling the cluster out of the dash. The new cluster installs in reverse order. If upgrading to Dakota Digital, the kit includes an interface module that connects to the factory wiring without cutting, and detailed instructions for each sending unit connection.

Accurate gauge readings on an early Bronco require properly matched sending units at the fuel tank (for the fuel gauge), engine block or oil gallery (for the oil pressure gauge), and coolant housing (for the temperature gauge). If installing an aftermarket gauge system like Dakota Digital, use the supplied sending units the manufacturer provided. Mixing old sending units with new gauges often results in incorrect or pegged readings.
