Steering Wheel Adapter For Early Ford Bronco Tilt Column

Choosing a steering wheel adapter for an Early Bronco is not one question. It is two, separated by a 1974 production change that affects both the adapter specification and everything about how the horn gets wired afterward.

The Compatibility Question Every Builder Asks First

Choosing a steering wheel adapter for an Early Bronco is not one question. It is two, separated by a 1974 column change that affects both the adapter and the horn installation sequence throughout.

The 1966-73 Vs. 1974-77 Column Split

The 1966-73 Bronco column uses a dual horn contact configuration. The 1974-77 column uses a single horn contact. These two configurations require different adapter specifications and different horn wiring approaches during installation. Ordering without confirming the year first is the most common and most easily avoidable adapter mistake on Early Bronco steering wheel builds.

Steering Wheel Adapter: What Changed In 1974

Ford revised the horn contact system on the 1974 Bronco column, moving from a dual-contact to a single-contact setup. The practical result is that a 66-73 Bronco horn button spring requires physical modification before any  adapter installation can proceed, while a 74-77 Bronco uses a single contact wire on the center post of the horn button without that modification requirement.

How Tilt Column Builds Add A Third Variable

A tilt column swap replaces the factory column entirely, which means the standard year-based adapter selection process no longer applies directly. The adapter must be matched to the specific tilt column installed rather than to the original factory column. Confirming the tilt column's spline count and horn contact configuration before ordering the adapter prevents the compatibility problems that appear at installation on tilt column builds.

What Happens When The Wrong Adapter Gets Ordered

An incorrect adapter either will not mount to the column splines or will mount incorrectly and leave the horn non-functional after installation. Both outcomes require disassembly and reordering before the build can proceed. Confirming the year and column type before purchase eliminates this delay entirely on any Early Bronco steering wheel build.

Our Steering Wheels And Adapter Options

We carry steering wheels for the 1966-77 Bronco through our Ford Bronco Steering Wheel catalog, across OE-style and custom options for restoration and restomod builds.

  • OE Style w/Chrome Horn Ring, 1966-77: Period-correct three-spoke design with chrome horn ring for restoration and driver builds requiring factory appearance throughout the cabin.
  • OE Style w/Chrome Horn Button, 1966-77: Same OE three-spoke design with horn button in place of horn ring for a cleaner, less chrome-heavy interior presentation.
  • Sport Steering Wheel 14.5 inch w/Horn Button: Smaller diameter sport wheel suited to power steering builds or enthusiasts wanting more responsive steering feel on the road and trail.
  • Black Leather Wrap Steering Wheel: Entry-level leather-wrapped option for trail builds and restomod interiors where custom feel matters more than factory-correct appearance.

All of these wheels are designed for correct fitment on the 1966-77 Bronco platform with the appropriate adapter matched to the specific column configuration in use on the build.

What The Horn Modification Requires

The horn button modification on 1966-73 Bronco builds is the step most builders underestimate and the one most likely to cause problems if skipped or performed out of sequence during installation.

Why The 66-73 Column Needs A Spring Modification

Every 1966-73 Early Bronco steering wheel installation requires cutting the external portion of the horn button spring before the adapter is installed. The spring wire must not contact the new steering wheel after installation. Pulling the spring out slightly, cutting it at the point where it re-enters the button housing, and pushing the remainder fully inside the plastic housing is the required modification before any further installation steps proceed.

Dual Vs Single Horn Contact In Practice

The 66-73 dual contact setup uses two horn contact wires on the hub. The 74-77 single contact setup uses one wire connected to the center post on the back of the horn button. Mixing up these configurations during installation results in a non-functional horn that requires full disassembly to correct after the wheel is already torqued to specification on the column.

How Tilt Column Hardware Changes Adapter Selection

Tilt columns for the 1966-77 Bronco are available in multiple configurations — black manual floor shift, polished stainless, automatic, and kit versions. Each configuration has its own spline count and adapter compatibility requirement. Confirming which specific tilt column is installed before selecting the adapter eliminates the fitment problems that otherwise appear at the point of installation on the finished build.

Setting Up The Horn Before The Wheel Goes On

Horn contact wires on the hub should be connected to the back of the horn button before the horn button cover is installed with the six mounting bolts. On the 74-77 Broncos, the single horn contact wire connects specifically to the center post on the back of the horn button. Completing this step in the correct sequence prevents the reassembly required when horn wiring is attempted after the cover is already installed and the wheel is torqued down.

Installing The Adapter Step By Step

Adapter installation on an Early Bronco follows a specific sequence that must begin with column preparation before the adapter or wheel is installed at any point in the process.

  • Disconnect And Prep: Disconnect the battery and remove the factory horn button before any column work begins to prevent horn shorts during the installation process.
  • Mark The Shaft: Mark the top of the steering shaft before removing the factory wheel so the new wheel installs in the correct centered position on the column splines.
  • Adapter Torque Sequence: Install the hub, apply grease from the enclosed capsules to the horn contact surface, position the wheel, and torque the steering shaft nut to 45-55 ft/lbs before tightening the three shoulder bolts to 10-12 ft/lbs.
  • Horn Verification Last: Reconnect the battery and verify horn function before considering the installation complete. A non-functioning horn after reconnection indicates a wiring or contact issue requiring correction before the vehicle is driven.

The TOMS OFFROAD Custom Steering Wheel Installation guide covers the full 66-73 horn button spring modification in detail. The Tilt Column Steering Wheel Installation guide covers the additional steps required when a tilt column is part of the Early Bronco build.

Frequently Asked Questions

The correct adapter depends on your column year. 66-73 uses dual horn contact. 74-77 uses single horn contact.

The factory spring wire must not contact the new steering wheel. Cutting the external spring portion before installation prevents this.

Yes. The adapter must match the tilt column's spline count and horn contact configuration rather than the original factory column.

The steering shaft nut torques to 45-55 ft/lbs. Shoulder bolts torque to 10-12 ft/lbs.

Yes, we carry OE-style wheels with chrome horn ring and horn button options starting from $294.95.

The adapter either will not mount correctly or the horn will not function, requiring full disassembly and correct adapter sourcing.
